Prep football: Darts roll Warriors

PLEASANT VIEW -- All Day.

Consecutive three-touchdown games and back-to-back 100-yard rushing performances by the Darts' Tyrel Day, and it is only week 3 of the high school football season.

Day, a senior tailback, rushed for a career-high 144 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries Friday in Davis High's decisive 30-7 Region 1 blowout of the Warriors at Earl Jones Field.

Prep football: Bears slip past Bees in hard-fought win

GARLAND -- On a warm Friday night at Bear Field, the Golden Spike game was played, and the Bear River Bears and Box Elder Bees battled valiantly to the end, as both teams were not going to give in.

Prep football: Silver Wolves use balanced attack to down Falcons

CLEARFIELD -- The Fremont Silver Wolves dominated throughout the night, led by running back Nick Vigil, who had his way on the ground with a pair of touchdown runs Friday in a 24-12 Region 1 victory over Clearfield.

Silver Wolves quarterback Aaron Van Woerkom also through a 15-yard touchdown pass to Rowdy Stucki.

Prep football: Lakers turn back Royals for 21-6 win

ROY -- The previous games haven't been much to look at between the Bonneville Lakers and the Roy Royals, with Bonneville winning the last three with no problems.

However, while those scores were spot on, Friday's 21-6 win for the Lakers wasn't without its moments. The score is slightly deceiving, considering that Bonneville scored with just over a minute left in the game, which up to that point had left the game in doubt.

Prep football: Morgan scores early to cruise past Wasatch

MORGAN -- For years the Wasatch Wasps have given Morgan fits on the football field. On Friday, the Trojans paid them back.

With a surprisingly efficient passing game and their usual bruising rushing attack, the Trojans ran all over the Wasps, 49-15, to remain undefeated through three preseason games.

USA Gymnastics to sanction cheerleading

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The national governing body for gymnastics has agreed to sanction college cheer competitions, a step aimed at getting competitive cheerleading recognized as a sport.

I used to make fun of "old-timers" who would shake their heads at the sight of progress -- or at least how we younger folks defined progress. What they thought was ridiculous we thought was simply the way things were. Well, now that I'm getting closer to "old-timer" status myself I'm starting to shake my head, too. And it's this whole high school sports on ESPN-thing that bothers me.
