Iraq was a necessary war

President Obama went on TV the other night to talk about the end of the combat mission in Iraq, and what he did not say is what very few are saying, least of all the ideologically disturbed, facts-rearranging left.

Wildcat athletics gearing up for start of season

Who knew that a Wildcat could ever become a Lion?

That revelation came to light in April when Tim Toone, the Weber State University Wildcats all-time receiving leader in receptions, yards, and touchdowns, was selected by the Detroit Lions as the final pick in the 2010 NFL draft.

His draft position led the media to dub him "Mr. Irrelevant," but Wildcat fans will tell you, as a student-athlete, Tim proved his relevance on and off the field.

OUR VIEW: Send in the helmets

Glenn Beck may have drawn more people to Washington D.C., but Utah recreationists also enjoyed a healthy turnout last Saturday. In a gathering that moved toward the Utah State Capitol, about 5,000 activists urged the federal government to stay off Utah's lands.

Many of those at the rally fear that the feds will restrict motorized recreational access to federal lands. "If we do nothing, we get nothing," said Mike Arbon, a member of the Northern Utah ATV Trail Riders club.

U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, and Utah Republican Gov. Gary Herbert attended and spoke at the rally. The crowd -- as well as the rhetoric -- was very conservative. One speaker railed against the so-called "environmental mafia."

Reader amazed by Republican Party

(UNEDITED) The Republican Party never ceases to amaze me. They are experts at least in one sense, as much as I regret giving them credit at being an expert at anything. They are experts at setting up the circumstance of any issue or situation where it's like, heads I win, tails you lose. Or no matter the outcome of a specific situation you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. And no matter how wrong they may be and no matter how much evidence you reveal that proves that they were wrong, they will never admit to it. they will continue to cover up for their wrong doings with more deception.

Dog park (r)evolution

(UNEDITED) All the leashes in the world couldn't hold back our family of humans and Mini Schnauzers when we learned there was an off leash dog park in Roy!

Dubbed the "high voltage park" by the regulars, the area is nothing more than a fenced in drainage pond under the busy buzz of power lines that could jump start your car if you merely wave the cables in the air. Do it yourself pace maker patients know how adjust their devices by just driving slowly under the wires. The park was paradise shaped like a square doggie dish. The abundant foxtails added texture to the play, the gaps under the fence hinted of escape, and the ever present mud puddle was a beautiful water feature. The drainage tunnel at the north end adds a dangerous element and is occupied by a schnauzer eating monster!

Healthy family lifestyles a boon

(UNEDITED) We all know the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Whether through personal experience, or the growing body of research that proves it, we all know that simple lifestyle choices -- such as a healthy diet, routine health screenings and regular exercise -- extend and enhance lives. What we are learning now is that these same habits individuals adopt to improve our own lives can also have a positive impact on business productivity and the overall cost of health care in America. This connection of better health with lower costs is especially timely as the work of expanding coverage through federal health care reform gets underway.

Iraq will be a mere footnote in Obama legacy

It was hardly surprising that President Barack Obama shied away from the previous administration's premature 2003 characterization of a "mission accomplished" in proclaiming the official end of the U.S. combat role in Iraq.

Aides had cautioned this would be no "victory lap," and as Obama observed in Tuesday night's Oval Office address, "Our combat mission is ending, but our commitment to Iraq's future is not."

Legal immigrants don't sneak in

(UNEDITED)It never ceases to amaze me as to how people comprehend the law. If the sped is posted at 65, is 75 obeying it ? Is it OK to steal if it doesn't exceed a certain amount ?

If it is illegal to come into this country without a visa, then is it "ok" to take advantage of its' education, medical and other tax supported facilities ?

Mosque issue is about respect

(UNEDITED) I just recently got back from spending most of my summer at the beautiful beaches of long Island, New York and the New Jersey shores. During my time back east, my blood pressure many times has been very high because of the debate of wanting to built a Muslim mosque at or near Ground Zero. New York mayor Bloomberg supports the mosque his reasoning - Freedom to practice your religion any where in the United States, especially New York. Mr Bloomberg give me a break. I am for freedom of religion - but at the same time where does respect come in-The issue is about respect, not freedom of religion.

Civil liberties dead in Ogden

(UNEDITED) I have never been ashamed of Ogden. Even when her southern cousin cities blossomed and she dilapidated and tarnished. I have always believed and held fast to the thought that while this was no utopia, we yearned and toiled and strived together to build the most culturally diverse community along the Wasatch. I believed Ogden was a place where we held our liberty above our prosperity; it was a place I was proud to call home. Today however; I am ashamed.

Quitting smoking an important goal

(UNEDITED) Thank you for your time. I just wanted to highlight the recent tax increase on tobacco products -- which took effect on July 01, 2010 -- was the only such increase approved by Utah legislature this year, which stresses both the health-related and economic benefits of tobacco cessation to Utah citizens.

The architect

OUR VIEW: Herbert pulls the religion card

It was certainly not Utah Gov. Gary Herbert's finest moment in this year's campaign for Utah governor.

Last week Herbert criticized Democratic challenger Peter Corroon's proposal for Utah high schoolers to complete 20 core credits, instead of 18, with the dubious logic that the Salt Lake County mayor's plan would likely lead to the elimination of LDS religious seminary classes. Many LDS school kids take advantage of a free class period in Utah schools by taking a church seminary class in nearby locations.

Don't blame pols for market problems

"Opinion, whether well or ill founded, is the governing principle of human affairs." -- Alexander Hamilton 1778

Thirty years ago, the nation was experiencing its worst peace time inflation. The media blamed Democratic President Jimmy Carter for the situation and the public largely echoed the media. The bad economy helped Ronald Reagan win 50.7 percent of the popular vote and defeat Carter.
