SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake City police say someone made off with a bronze replica of the "Little Mermaid" statue in a city park.

The 3-foot statue, modeled after the famous original in Copenhagen, is valued at more than $28,000.

Salt Lake police say a city parks employee last saw the statue Feb. 23.

The statue has been a mainstay at the International Peace Gardens at Jordan Park since 1955.

Police spokeswoman Robin Snyder says it's unclear how the thieves got the statue off the rock it was attached to. She says it weighs between 50 pounds and 100 pounds.
