LDS community gearing up to hear church leaders all weekend

SALT LAKE CITY -- Dale Lindley won't be watching this morning's session of the 179th Semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City.

The former bishop of the West Weber First Ward will be helping his son-in-law finish a house.

But Lindley and others who will be helping will have several radios going as they hurry to finish the project before the afternoon session. Then they'll attend another two-hour meeting in the evening devoted to male priesthood holders.

"I just feel a love for those who have devoted their lives to serving," Lindley said of his excitement to hear the talks.

"There is room for everybody to be a better person. I think if we listen to the simple messages, a lot can be done."

Lindley is just one of millions across the world expected to participate today and Sunday via television, radio, satellite and Internet broadcasts in five sessions of the conference.

About 100,000 people are expected to attend a live session in the Conference Center.

Lindley's favorite memory is staying with his grandparents, who had an apartment near Temple Square, during a General Conference weekend when he was about 10.

He and his brother milled around trying to see if they could see any church general authorities.

"All at once, a big, black car came around the corner," he said. "We looked over, and it was David O. McKay (church president from 1951 to 1970).

"We started jumping and waving at him. We ran as fast as we could to keep up with his car. He was laughing to see these boys on the sidewalk trying to keep up with his car."

Tickets are required to enter the Conference Center, where attendees will be required to pass through a security check. Cameras, recording devices, weapons, food, backpacks, packages and large bags are not allowed.

Overflow seating for all sessions will be available in the Tabernacle, the North Visitors' Center on Temple Square, and the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.

Overflow seating for Spanish speakers will be provided in the Assembly Hall for all five sessions. Overflow seating will also be available in the Conference Center Theater for Priesthood and Sunday sessions only.

Tickets are not required for admission to overflow facilities.

Public parking is available at Eagle Gate Terrace, 145 E. Social Hall Ave. (50 South); Regent Street Parking, 119 S. Regent St. (50 East), and the Triad Center, 66 N. 400 West.

Disability parking is available at the West Temple Overflow at 134 W. North Temple.

Cars parked on nearby residential neighborhood streets may be ticketed or towed at the owner's expense.

Conference attendees are encouraged to carpool or use public transportation to relieve downtown traffic congestion.

A detailed broadcast schedule of General Conference can be found at www.bonneville.info. Information regarding audio and video streams via the Internet can be found at www.lds.org/broadcast/.

General Conference, with the exception of the Priesthood session, will be broadcast live on BYU Television.
