SALT LAKE CITY -- The
Utah House has rejected a bill that would have prevented school boards
from paying teachers who miss work while performing certain union
duties.
Lawmakers voted 34-25 against Senate Bill 77 Tuesday.
The
bill was amended on the floor of the House to include a number of
loopholes through which teachers could qualify for paid leave.
But
those exceptions didn't satisfy the bill's critics, who called it a
one-size-fits-all approach that wouldn't work when applied to a diverse
body of school districts.
